Abstract

This research aims to describe identity politics which is often misunderstood as part of practical politics which is national politics. The problem in this research is the tendency for political participation to give preference to one of the political contestations based on personal identity in the form of ethnicity or religion. The research method used in this study is a qualitative approach. The results of this research show that identity politics is related to ethnicity or ethnic identity, religion, ideology and local interests which are generally represented by political elites. Identity politics based on primordial ties will easily replace citizenship politics, and national insight will be pushed aside. Identity politics has the potential to destroy the democratic principles that have become the government system adopted by Indonesia considering the pluralism of its society. The practice of identity politics will be one of the important things for Indonesia ahead of the 2024 elections, considering that identity politics is closely related to equal rights, unity and integrity of society, as well as democratic principles.
